La Iguana Golf Course Recognized for Environmental Excellence
The La Iguana Golf Course at Los Suenos Marriott Ocean and Golf Resort has achieved designation as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program. Manuel Gonzalez G., Course Superintendent, has led the effort to obtain sanctuary status on this course and is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. La Iguana Golf Course is the 5thcourse in Costa Rica and the 731st in the world to receive the honor. "La Iguana Golf Course has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property," said Jim Sluiter, Staff Ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs.
"To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas," explained Sluiter. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.
“Audubon has been a quite interesting experience in my career. I have had to overcome the challenge of looking for a balance within three aspects that I once thought unrelated: protecting the environment, meeting the golf course’s maintenance standards, and generating a positive economic impact. Throughout time, I realized that you can achieve balance, maintain it and also spread it out throughout the community. It is a tool that when getting the personnel and the golfers involved, they would show immediate interest by actuating by enthusiasm and commitment for the project and by helping to spread their view on it,” Said Manuel González G., Course Superintendent.
The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, and Southeast Asia have also achieved certification in the program.

VIII Annual La Iguana Invitational Golf Tournament In an unparalleled event, the long-awaited daytime and nighttime golf tournament took place in our La Iguana Golf Course on Saturday, February 6th, 2010.
Thanks to the exceptional participation of our sponsors, the golf event was as successful as had been predicted.
Twenty seven teams composed of three players each, using the best ball format (Scramble), battled for 18 holes on this spectacular day to secure a place as one of the 20 teams to participate in the nighttime finals.
The La Iguana nighttime event captivated the imagination of the golfers. The course seduced the players with a stage filled with colored lights. The traps were elegantly outlined with red lights; the lakes and rivers radiated with blue lights; the fairways were resplendent in white showing the route to follow, and the greens were dazzling with green illumination.
This beautiful setting provided the nighttime backdrop for these talented individuals to play five incredible holes in the alternate shot format.
An explosive fireworks display presented by CAVICA provided a perfect end to our successful tournament.
